This historic postage stamp was originally issued by the United Arab Republic (UAR), a political union between Egypt and Syria (1958–1961), and later used by Egypt. It depicts the spiral minaret of the Great Mosque of Samarra, printed in blue, with an overprint in red reading “Palestine” (فلسطين / PALESTINE).
The overprint was added by Egyptian postal authorities for use in the Gaza Strip, which was under Egyptian administration following the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. The red “Palestine” marking symbolized solidarity and recognition of Palestinian identity during a period of shifting borders and post-war governance.
